Notes for William CONDELL
His family were members of the First Baptist Church which my family also attended. He was a stout Christian man.

He was the head foreman for  Robert Hazlett who was the foremost breeder of White Face cattle in the world. A dispersion sale was held at the Hazlett place just north of El Dorado in about 1936. Foreign heads of state attended this sale and purchased some fine animals which sold for up to $5,000 or more. There was a Booklet put out at this sale and I received one. At this time there is not one of them to be found in Butler County. The book had a picture of each animal to be sold and the history of it as well. It was about four inches wide and six inches high and about 3/4 of an inch thick.

A page out of the book, "Biography of The First Baptist Church , El Dorado, Kansas" written in 1954 has a story about he and his family. It is as follows:
William Condell

"One event forever honors the pastorate of Rev. J. B. Wakem. January nineteenth (1908), the second Sunday of the Wakem ministry, young Will Condell, in the pleasant warmth and peacefulness of the sanctuary, presented himself for church membersship. Young Mrs. Condell, whose influence had brought a young Methodist constituent to a conviction of Baptist faith, contendely looked on.

Across a snow-covered ground, February sixteenth, amid cinders and ashes, in the ruins of the cracked baptistry open to bitter cold and biting wind, with only a canvas screen for protection, Will Condell was baptised.

And this began his loyal devotion to the Baptist cause---- in El Dorado, Kansas, in the Nation. A Steward of God!

Mr. Condell has filled important offices in the denomination; local, state and national. He has been Moderator of the Walnut Valley Baptist Association and President of the Kansas Baptist Association and President of the Kansas Baptist Convention. He served on the State Board of Directors for more that a quarter of a century. Through a continous tenure of twenty years, he has been a trustee of both the Ottowa University and Central Seminary. He is presently head of the Kansas Council of Baptist Men, and last year was elected to be a member of the Finance Committee of the American Baptist Convention, which position was formerly held by W. C. Coleman of Wichita. (Coleman LanternCo.)jm.

During forty-four years, William Condell has proved himself a worker, an optimist, loyal to ideals; given to open-handedness and largess in financial support. He quitely becomes the sponsor for success of any church planning.

Will meets the need. And, if the need is meat-----he "giveth them their meat in due season" (Plsa. 245:15).

During our observervance of the 75th Church Annversary (9 April 30-May 5, 1946 this raiser of fine corn-fed stock regaled visiting guests with choice incomparabe steaks, and furnished huge pink slices of roast beef to all the large assembly gathered at the banquet table. But he said unto them, "Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for the meat which endureth unto everlasting life" (John 6:27). And they "did all eat the same spiritual meat." (I Cor. 10:3)."

I remember the last time I saw him. It was at a Wednesday nite business meeting when something came up in which he did not agree. He of course spoke for the cause but the vote was won by the "nayes." I noticed as he left the church that he was down hearted. He died that nite in his sleep.
