It is believed that Capt. James Bollen was from the Isle of Jersey, one of the Channel Islands. New Jersey wasn't in existence until 1664. It is believed he came to America with Capt. Richard Nicholls when he was sent over by the English to kick the Dutch out of New York. Capt. James Bollen died in Woodbridge 1682 and left two children -- James and Anna, both of whom chose Samuel Moore and Nathaniel Fitz Randolph as their guardians, indicating that they were minors. The birth of James Jr., which is listed as 1603, is in error. He had a son George, mariner of New York, who was of age in 1682; and possibly a daughter Mary, also of age when Capt. James died. A buyer at the sale of his estate was Ann Bollen, presumably his wife. There is no proof of her ancestry, but it has been reported she was Anne Vauquellin, daughter of Robert Vauquellin and his wife Jeane. This is based on the flimsy evidence that Capt. James was a witness to the will of Vauquellin in 1673. Just because someone is a witness to a will does not mean that person married the testator's daughter.
