Notes for John LEE
Got some of estate. Made a lot more money than others (in family). Lost in beg furniture store. Bought sold stuff. Lost in bank. His children all went to sea coast every year. Was church member, very strict about Sunday, and had a family felb(?). Had a chair factory-loved to fish and somtimes went fox hunting. Was great horse racer. Danced with Grandmother after they were 60 years old, probably waltz and polka. Was auctioneer, cabinet maker and appraiser. Was about 89 or 90 when he died. Was buried at Torrington, England.
Mr. J. Lee was a cabinet maker of Great Torrington. He bought the Staple Vale mill from Mr. Turton. He converted it into a workshop using the water-wheel for turning various articles in his trade. This water-wheel and all the other machinery of the woollen manufactory have disappeared with one interesting exception; the place is now used for a cider-press and the storage of agricultural implements, etc., and it still remains a conspicuous and substantial building in Wear Gifford. The machine is still used by Mr. John Bartlett Lee, the son of the purchaser of the Wear Gifford factory, in his business of a cabinet-maker in Great Torrington, for combing out the flock of mattresses, etc., the only alteration being the addition of several single rows of iron spikes on the large wooden cylinder, between the original double ones.
From his headstone:
In affectionate remembrance of John Lee who entered into rest January 17 1892 aged 89 years " I
Shall Know Him".
